Ottiwell is an ancient name, first recorded as a given name in England in the 11th century. It was later recorded as a surname.

One of the earliest recorded Ottiwells (as a personal name) was the son of Hugh d'Avranches, 1st Earl of Chester - a Norman. This Ottiwell was a tutor to the children of Henry I of England who perished at sea in the White Ship Sinking.
