Origin Broadband is a British ISP and network operator based in Doncaster and Sheffield, South Yorkshire that specialises in providing consumer and wholesale internet connectivity, including FTTC, ADSL2+, Leased Lines, wireless 'point to point' systems, and general fixed line telecommunications services. Services such as co-location, website hosting and remote backup storage are also available from Origin’s secure datacentre. Origin Broadband currently operates the UK's 6th largest network.

History

Origin Broadband was formed by two students in Doncaster to address the perceived failures in the local broadband market in terms of speed, customer service and quality of technical support. The company began by providing services to customers through Digital Region fibre optic infrastructure, which was a largely publicly funded network. Origin Broadband quickly grew to become the largest ISP on the network.

Origin began its award-nominated apprenticeship program in 2012, as well as beginning Data centre operations, allowing the provision of services such as web hosting, co-location and remote storage backup.

The company started to plan the creation of its own infrastructure in 2014, and now operates its own privately owned network, which currently stands as the 6th largest in the UK.

From April 2015 Origin Broadband became one of the leading suppliers of the SuperConnected Cities connection vouchers, an initiative ran by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. Notably, Origin supplied the first connection voucher in South Yorkshire, and remained the leading regional supplier throughout the project.

Following the cessation of the Superconnected Cities initiative, Origin Broadband set aside a fund of £10m and launched a voucher programme of their own. The Origin Broadband Connection Vouchers gave eligible businesses a fully funded installation for a leased line or similar premium connection.

Additional investment was secured in August 2015 from Finance Yorkshire.

In early 2016 Origin Broadband reformatted the way that they marketed their products, consolidating business-class connectivity into a sub-brand, Origin Broadband Business. They also launched new propositions designed for schools, colleges and universities, Origin Broadband Education, and a partner programme, Origin Broadband Wholesale.

In July 2016, the company completely redesigned its primary branding. The new styling appears cleaner, more bold and the website as a whole has been simplified and streamlined for ease of use.

In December 2016, Private equity fund manager and Enterprise Investment Scheme (EIS) and Venture Capital Trust (VCT) specialist Calculus Capital has invested £3,000,000 in Origin Broadband to fund rapid recruitment and building expansion.

In January 2017, Origin was featured by Moneysaving Expert for their 'UK's Cheapest line and broadband' deal - which was priced at £189.99 for 12 months of service.
