Opendium is a private company that develops, sells and supports cost effective Internet content control and auditing, network security, firewalling, anti-spam and anti-virus systems, primarily for schools. The company also offers network design consultancy and voice over IP telephony systems.

Their product development strategies have involved working closely with notable independent British schools, such as Sherborne School and King's School, Bruton as well as state funded schools and academies. Opendium's focus is on giving schools extensive reporting and auditing capabilities, providing them with information that can be fed back into the students' education and allowing a more relaxed attitude to filtering.

History

2005 - Colleagues Harry Mills and Steve Hill founded the company after realising that there was a need for suppliers to work more closely with schools to support and develop solutions in partnership with them, having worked together on Internet filtering and network security products at Navaho Technologies for the preceding five years.

2008 - Having worked for the company part-time since its formation, Steve Hill began working for the expanding company on a full-time basis.

2010 - Opendium released their first complete content control product called Iceni. Iceni provided email and web filtering. Opendium also collaborated with Netsweeper Inc. to give customers the option of using the Becta approved third party Netsweeper categorisation system in addition to the built in Iceni system, but as Becta was dissolved soon after Iceni was initially released, the ability to interface with Netsweeper was never heavily promoted, although the capability remains part of the product.

2014 - After working extensively with customers, Opendium launched a major revision of their existing successful Iceni content control and security product, incorporating many new features and an improved, completely rewritten, user interface.

2016 - In line with the Department for Education's "Keeping children safe in education" guidance, Opendium joined the Internet Watch Foundation.
