Map of Oostkapelle, Netherlands

Oostkapelle derives its name to a chapel which apparently in the nineteenth century was there, along with another chapel, which was present at the nearby village of Westkapelle. As a stronghold, the western sister village of Oostkapelle developed significantly better than Oostkapelle in the Middle Ages. Oostkapelle remained a farmering village until the twentieth century. After the Second World War the village developed in the vein of Domburg and Zoutelande to a spa, with dunes and the North Sea at a short distance. As a result, the village was not subject to depopulation.
