Nguyễn Văn Nhạc (Chinese: 阮文岳, ? - 1793) was the founder of the Tây Sơn Dynasty, reigning from 1778 to 1793.

Biography

During the years 1778 - 1788, Nguyễn Văn Nhạc was proclaimed Emperor Thái Đức (泰德帝). Since 1788, after his younger brother became Emperor Quang Trung, he resigned his Emperor title and claimed himself as King Tây Sơn. Since 1789, he was proclaimed the King of Tay Son. Nguyen Van Nhac and his brothers, namely Nguyễn Văn Lữ and Nguyễn Văn Huệ, known as the Tay Son Brothers, are the leaders of the Tay Son uprising that ended the long civil war between the two feudal groups, Trinh Lords in the Northern Annam and the Nguyễn Lords in the Southern Annam, seizing reigning power from these groups and the Lê Dynasty.
