The New Zealand national cricket team represents New Zealand in international cricket and is a full member of the International Cricket Council (ICC) with Test and One Day International (ODI) status. They played their first Test in 1930 against England in Christchurch, New Zealand, becoming the fifth country to play Test cricket. It took the team until 1955–56 to win a Test, against the West Indies at Eden Park in Auckland. They played their first ODI in the 1972–73 season against Pakistan in Christchurch. They are the joint oldest nation with Australia to play first Twenty20 International in 2005.

Though New Zealand played more than 400 Tests, they have won lower than 100 Test matches at a rate of almost 20.67%. As of November 2016, New Zealand have played 416 Test matches; they have won 86 matches, lost 169 matches, and 161 matches were drawn.

New Zealand is also one of the successful ODI team in the history as well, where they have reached many tournament's semi-finals. They are really good at their home soil, none other than any other nation at their home soil. As of February 2016, New Zealand have played 711 ODI matches, winning 313 matches and losing 354; they also tied 6 matches, whilst 38 had no result. They have reached six semi-finals at Cricket World Cup which is more than any other, in 1975, 1979, 1992, 1999, 2007, and 2011. New Zealand best world cup milestone came as runner-up in 2015. In ICC Champions Trophy, New Zealand became champions in 2000. They are also became runner up in ICC Champions Trophy 2009 and semi-finalists in ICC Champions Trophy 2006 as well.

New Zealand has showed avarage performances in Twenty20 Internationals, with no any great threat to other T20I nations. As of February 2016, New Zealand have played 88 T20I matches and won 42 of them; 39 were lost and 5 tied and 2 no result match as well. The winning percentage is only 51.74. During 5 ICC World Twenty20 tournaments, New Zealand's best performance came during 2007, where they finished as semi-finalists.

As of January 2016, New Zealand have faced all nine teams in Test cricket, with their most frequent opponent is England; playing 101 matches against them. However, they have registered more wins against Sri Lanka, but the best winning percentage of 43.75, where won 14 out of 32 tests. In ODI matches, New Zealand have played against 18 teams; they have played against their continent rivals, Australia most frequently, with a winning percentage of 28.92 in 127 matches. Within usual major ODI nations, New Zealand have defeated Sri Lanka on 45 occasions, which is their best record in ODIs. The team have competed against 13 countries in T20Is, and have played 16 matches against Sri Lanka again. Out of that, New Zealand have defeated Sri Lanka in 8 occasions.
