It tells the story of the crews of the RAF's No. 311 Squadron, which was mainly crewed by escaped Czech and Slovak airmen, and their bombing raids during the Second World War. The movie is based on the novel Nebeští jezdci (Sky Riders, 1964) by Czech World War II RAF and Soviet Air Force air gunner Richard Husmann, as Filip Jánský. Partial inspiration for the novel was the story of František (Frankie) Truhlář, a member of Guinea Pig Club, No. 311 Squadron RAF gunner and later No. 312 (Czechoslovak) Squadron RAF pilot.
