The 'Academia Naţională de Educaţie Fizică şi Sport Bucureşti (ANEFS), is one of the highest-profile higher education institutions in Romania, and was founded on 1 December 1922, in Bucharest, and obtained the status of a university in 2002.

ANEFS is one of the major physical education and sport institutions in Eastern Europe, and the degrees are awarded by the Minister of Education and Research of Romania, and are recognised by other countries with whom bilateral agreements have been signed.

Among those who have graduated from the university include coaches, sports people and managers, including some of the most important in Romania, such as Ion Ţiriac, Ivan Patzaichin, Octavian Belu, Iolanda Balaș, and Uca Marinescu – the first woman to reach the North Pole.

A number of sports people from Olympic and international competition have also attended, including Nadia Comăneci, Laura Badea, Gabriela Szabo, Elisabeta Lipă, Marius Urzică, and Marian Simion.
