Nancy Motes was born on May 19, 1976, in Smyrna, Georgia, USA. Her birth name was Nancy Dabbs Motes. She was a dog trainer by profession. Her relationship with her half-sister Julia Roberts was reportedly strained and rough for years. On the fateful day of February 9 in 2014, Nancy Motes was found drowned in her bathtub after a drug overdose. She reportedly committed suicide due to prolonged depression and also left a long suicide note behind accusing her sister Julia of bullying.

A detailed account of her relationship with Oscar-winning Hollywood star Julia Roberts can be learned through the suicide letter that Nancy left behind with her death. In the letter, Nancy described Julia as her 'so-called sibling' and claimed that the actress was so cruel to her over the years that she drove her into 'the deepest depression' she has ever been in.
In the note, Nancy also mentioned that Roberts’ abuse had been so bad that ‘I burst into tears every morning (because) I woke up.’. Nancy blamed Julia and their mother Betty Lou Bredemus equally for her death in the suicide note and mentioned that her mother and sister should get nothing but the memory that they pushed her over the edge.
Nancy's fiance John Dilbeck also indulged in a legal battle with Roberts and her mother after her death for her legal estates. John called the Hollywood actress publically for intimidating and harassing Nancy. In fact, in an interview just a few months before her death, Nancy had given an interview where she told the media that Roberts keep bullying and taunting her for being overweight. On the other hand, Roberts mourned her sister's death calling it heartbreaking.
In addition to Julia Roberts, Motes' other siblings were actor Eric Roberts and actress Lisa Roberts Gillan.
