The following table lists the names of India in the Union government's official languages.

The Union government uses primarily English in addition to Hindi which was a "subsidiary official language" for its official purposes. The Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution lists 22 languages including Hindi, which have been referred to as scheduled languages and given recognition, status and official encouragement. But the Union government is also required to prepare and execute a programme to progressively increase its use of Hindi.

The exact extent to which, and the areas in which, the Union government uses English, or any other Eighth schedule languages including Hindi, respectively, is determined by the provisions of the Constitution, the Official Languages Act, 1963, the Official Languages Rules, 1976, and statutory instruments made by the Department of Official Language of the Union Government under these laws. The Constitution of India does not give any languages the status of national language.
