The N. Waldo Harrison Professorship was established in 1987 by Virginia Tech College of Engineering alumnus Nathaniel Waldo Harrison. Harrison graduated from Virginia Tech. formerly known as Virginia Polytechnic Institute (VPI), in 1934, the end of the depression, with a B.S. Degree in Mechanical Engineering. He was then awarded a Teaching Fellowship in the VPI Applied Mechanics Department from where obtained a Masters Degrees in 1935. The professorship honors distinguished faculty scholars in the successors to the Department of Applied Mechanics, currently the Department of Engineering Science and Mechanics.
Harrison served as a member of General Dwight D. Eisenhower’s staff at the Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Forces in Frankfurt, Germany, during World War II, and later created the professorship to acknowledge the extraordinary education he received at Virginia Tech.
