Engaged couple Frankie Forster (Anne Shirley) and Stanley Benson (Dennis Day) bring their song-and-dance show to Broadway. Ticket sales, however, are low. In order to keep the show afloat, Frankie needs to get to Washington, D.C., and claim her inheritance. But, when her plane is full, Frankie poses as the wife of a war hero named Johnny Pearson (Phillip Terry), a scheme resulting in unforeseen consequences for both her personal and her professional life.
Music in Manhattan is a 1944 American musical film directed by John H. Auer. The film was nominated for an Academy Award for Sound Recording (Stephen Dunn).
In this musical comedy, a pair of small-potatoes performers try to make it to the big-time after winning an amateur talent contest. Though this leads them to a few professional gigs, something is missing from their act and they are not popular. Believing a little cash will boost their career, the girl heads for Washington, D.C. to see if her wealthy daddy will help them. En route she is mistaken for the wife of a well-known pilot and ends up in his suite having to pretend she is his spouse. When the pilot meets her, romantic sparks fly.
