MulteFire is a form of LTE deployment in unlicensed frequency bands. It is an extension of the ideas in LAA/LTE-U. LAA/LTE-U leverage both licensed and unlicensed spectrum. MulteFire, by contrast, exclusively uses the unlicensed spectrum. This allows MulteFire to be deployed by anyone, anywhere, similar to Wi-Fi hotspots.
MulteFire was initiated by Qualcomm and Nokia (later joined by Intel and Ericsson), and is now being driven by the MulteFire Alliance.
