Byron A. Stierer served as a member of the 1962 wintering party operating the Nuclear Power plant at McMurdo Station, and then was killed by a drunk driver in ChristChurch New Zealand on his first day back from McMurdo Station, leaving a wife and small children He was one of my classmates in Class 60-1 of the joint service, Army Nuclear Power Plant Operator's Course in Ft Belvoir Va and I knew him well. I'm sure the decision was made to name the mountain after him, in remembrance of his tragic loss after serving so well in that remote location.
