Monkey pot

Monkey pot is a common name for many tropical trees in the genus Lecythis and the fruits produced by these trees. The name is said to derive from baiting an empty fruit with food and fixing it to a low branch; a monkey can easily insert its paw through the opening, but cannot withdraw it once it has grasped the contents.

Trees producing fruits commonly called monkey pot include:

  • Lecythis pisonis
  • Lecythis ollaria
  • Lecythis zabucajo
