History
The MoneyMuseum was founded by financial analyst Dr Jürg Conzett in 1999. He assigned his private collection to the Sunflower Foundation, which had been founded specifically as the umbrella organization of the MoneyMuseum. With the website www.moneymuseum.com he went online in the same year, as the world’s first numismatic museum ever.
In October 2000, the MoneyMuseum founded a branch in the Swiss National Museum. In 2002, it opened a permanent exhibition in the Museum Bärengasse. That was also the venue of the highly regarded exhibition ‘The People of Zurich and their Money’ which did not focus on coins but one the way people make use of money. In February 2003, the MoneyMuseum got its own 500 square meters premises at Hadlaubstrasse 106. Since then, the permanent exhibition is regularly supplemented by special presentations and events.
Orientation
The MoneyMuseum considers itself as a modern communications platform, which aims ‘at making the visitor aware of the historical, economic and social background of the individual objects, thus making him reflect about his own use of money.’
The MoneyMuseum on the internet
Prepared by the staff, the MoneyMuseum offers information material on the internet for free. Among the range on offer are the history of money in the past as well as ‘Money:critical’ where distinguished economic theorists deal with current aspects of money. As of 2016, the MoneyMuseum places a new focus on ‘Crisis’.
