The Modern Ukrainian language (Ukrainian: Сучасна українська мова) is the form of the Ukrainian language commonly used since the late 17th century. After the Truce of Andrusovo in 1667, the "simple language" (Ukrainian: проста мова), or the commonly spoken vernacular language of Ukraine, began to be written down and widely used in official documents of the Cossack Hetmanate. The first printed work in the modern Ukrainian language is Eneyida by Ivan Kotlyarevskiy, and is also credited to be the first book of modern Ukrainian literature. Hramatka by Panteleimon Kulish, published in 1857 is one of the first textbooks of the modern Ukrainian language.

The Ukrainian Academy of Sciences (now called the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine) was created in 1918 by the Ukrainian State to study and regulate the Ukrainian language.
