The eleventh series of Mitre 10 Dream Home premiered on 2 July 2013 at 7.30 pm on TV2. It was the first new series since the 10th series screened in 2009, with Christchurch broadcaster Simon Barnett replacing Jayne Kiely as the host. The winners were Martyn and Sarah, from the Orange Team.

Contents

The series build takes place in Kaiapoi, a satellite town of Christchurch which was badly affected by the 2010 Canterbury earthquake and the subsequent 2011 Christchurch earthquake. In October 2012, unlike previous series, the six finalist families were announced and the public were given a chance to vote for their favourite, with the family that receives the most votes securing a spot on the show. The other family was picked by the three series judges.

Due to changes in the building code post-earthquake, the teams couldn't renovate a relocatable house as was done in previous series.. Instead the teams were required to design and build a house from scratch. The team colours were changed in 2013, with an orange team and a black team, consistent with the branding of series sponsor Mitre 10 Mega.

Judges

Each week's challenge was judged by a panel of three judges, each with their own area of expertise. The judges are:

  • Huia Reriti - architecture judge
  • David Reid - building judge
  • Leeann Yare - interior design judge
  • Contestants

In episode one, viewers were introduced to the six families in the running for the two team slots. They were:

  • The Fail/Blair family: Amanda Fail (31) and Jay Blair (29) and their three children.
  • The Giles family: Martyn Giles (43) and Sarah Giles (35) and their six children. Incidentally, the street which the houses are located on is just off Giles Street.
  • The McManus/Clarkson family: Manu Clarkson (33) and Danielle McManus (27) and their three children.
  • The Murphy family: Jarrad Murphy (28) and Casey Murphy (24) and their two children.
  • The Vercoe family: Damian Vercoe (30) and Crystal Vercoe (29) and their two children.
  • The Wilson family: Riki Wilson (25) and Whitney Wilson (24) and their two children.
  • For the decider challenge, the six families had to design their own dream home and build a model in 24 hours and present it to the panel of judges. The two successful finalists were the Giles family (the Orange team), who won the public vote; and the Fail/Blair family (the Black team), who won the judges' vote based on their dream home design. The unsuccessful families were given a $1000 Mitre 10 voucher.

    Mitre 10 Dream Home: Offcuts

Mitre 10 Dream Home: Offcuts was a weekly half-hour spin-off show. Screening at 7 pm on Saturday nights, the show revisited the weekly challenges with the teams and showed behind-the-scenes footage.
