The Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport of Spain was created in December 2011 by Royal Decree.

Since 2015, the Minister of Education, Culture and Sport is Íñigo Méndez de Vigo y Montojo.

It is made up of the previous ministries of Education, Culture and incorporates the Higher Council for Sport, which had previously reported to the Ministry of the Presidency.

Responsibilities

The Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport is a department of the General Administration responsible for:

  • Suggesting and carrying out the Government policy in educational affairs of professional training and universities.
  • Promoting, protecting and spreading the historical spanish patrimony, the state museums and arts, books, read and literary creations, the cinematographic and audiovisual activities, the state libraries and promote and spread the culture in spanish.
  • Suggesting and carrying out the Government policy in sports affairs.
  • Moreover, this department has to foster cooperation actions and international relations in educational, cultural and sports affairs in coordination with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation.
