The Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, Food and Environment (Spanish: Ministerio de Agricultura y Pesca, Alimentación y Medio Ambiente) also known as MAPAMA is a ministerial department of the Government of Spain. Its headquarters is in the Ministry of Agriculture Building, an emblematic nineteenth-century edifice located in Madrid, Spain.

This department includes the tasks of the former Ministry of Environment and the former Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries. It has an important role in the policies against climate change and in favour of sustainable development.

The Ministry is responsible for assigning Veterinary Surgeons to carry out checks in regard to the issuing of REGA Licences (Registro de Explotación) a requirement for the ownership of horses on Spanish property and small holdings.

Responsibilities

The Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, Food and Environment is a department of the General Administration responsible for:

  • Making the state legislation in water, shores, environment, hills, meteorology and climatology affairs.
  • Suggesting and carrying out the general guidelines of the Government about the agricultural, fishing and food policy.
  • Managing the hydraulic, maritime and terrestrial public property.
  • Representing the State at the international organizations belonging to these affairs, without prejudice to the competencies of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation.
  • Coordinating the actions, cooperating and setting up the design and the implementation of all the policies which affect the Autonomous Communities and the remaining public administrations' competencies sphere, promoting their involvement through the organizations and the suitable resources.
