The Minister of Defense heads the Ministry of Defense (Arabic: وزارة الدفاع), a ministry in Saudi Arabia tasked with coordinating and supervising all major government agencies and federal departments of the government relating directly to National security and the Saudi Armed Forces.

Former name
The ministry was previously known as the ministry of defense and aviation (Arabic: وزارة الدفاع والطيران), founded on 10 November 1943. The name changed to the ministry of defence on the death of Saudi Crown Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz on 22 October 2011, when former governor of Riyadh Prince Salman bin Abdulaziz was appointed to the post. Prince Salman became the king of Saudi Arabia on 23 January 2015 and Prince Mohammad bin Salman Al Saud was appointed minister of defence.
