Miniature Inverted-repeat Transposable Elements (MITEs) exist within the genomes of animals, plants and bacteria. MITEs are short (< 500 bp) and non-autonomous elements with terminal inverted repeats (TIRs; 10–15 bp). Like other transposons, MITEs are inserted predominantly in gene-rich regions.
