Millsboro is a town in Sussex County, Delaware. The population was 3,877 at the 2010 census, an increase of 64.3% over the past decade. It is part of the Salisbury, Maryland-Delaware Metropolitan Statistical Area.

State temperature records

On July 21, 1930, the temperature in Millsboro rose to 110 °F (43 °C), the highest temperature ever recorded in Delaware. On January 17, 1893, the temperature fell to -17 °F (-27 °C) in Millsboro, the coldest temperature experienced in the state. Millsboro is one of only three cities in the United States to record both its state's extreme temperatures, the others being Chester, Massachusetts and Warsaw, Missouri.

History

The Robert Davis Farmhouse, Harmon School, Isaac Harmon Farmhouse, Harmony Church, Ames Hitchens Chicken Farm, Indian Mission Church, Indian Mission School, Indian River Archeological Complex, Johnson School, Perry-Shockley House, Warren's Mill, and Warren T. Wright Farmhouse Site at and near Millsboro are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Geography

Millsboro is located at 38°35′29″N 75°17′29″W (38.5915023, -75.2913018).

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.9 square miles (4.9 km2), of which 1.7 square miles (4.4 km2) is land and 0.2 square miles (0.52 km2) (10.82%) is water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 2,360 people, 1,045 households, and 619 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,367.9 people per square mile (526.7/km²). There were 1,153 housing units at an average density of 668.3 per square mile (257.3/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 73.64% White, 19.41% African American, 0.76% Native American, 3.31% Asian, 1.61% from other races, and 1.27% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.09% of the population.

There were 1,045 households out of which 23.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.2% were married couples living together, 13.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 40.7% were non-families. 36.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 19.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.13 and the average family size was 2.77.

In the town, the population was spread out with 21.4% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 24.3% from 25 to 44, 21.5% from 45 to 64, and 26.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 71.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 68.9 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $27,379, and the median income for a family was $32,708. Males had a median income of $30,700 versus $22,100 for females. The per capita income for the town was $15,157. About 14.7% of families and 18.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 23.2% of those under age 18 and 18.2% of those age 65 or over.
