Mike Pitts from Laurens, South Carolina, is a six-term Republican member of the South Carolina House of Representatives. He is most famous for his proposed bill in 2010 that South Carolina move away from using U.S. currency in favor of gold and silver bullion. Pitts said that the proposal is an attempt to preserve the economy of South Carolina in the midst of inflationary policy. Pitts sees federal monetary policy as an intrusion on states' rights.

Pitts has introduced legislation that would require journalists to meet certain criteria established by the government of South Carolina. The proposed criteria has not yet been released, nor has specifics for enforcement of this legislation.
