Ennis was the eldest son of Thomas John Ennis (who played for Carlton in 1896) and Mary Josephine Sullivan. After playing with Carlton seconds for some time, Ennis transferred to Port Melbourne in the Victorian Football Association during the 1923 final series. He made 26 appearances for Port before applying to join Hawthorn early in the 1925 VFL season.
