Michael Makepeace Thackeray is a chemist and battery materials researcher. Since 1994, he is working in the Argonne National Laboratory. He is one of the researchers who invented the use of spinel oxides in lithium ion batteries.

Career

Thackeray obtained his M.Sc and Ph.D. in Chemistry at the University of Cape Town, South Africa. He worked for the South African research organization CSIR several times: From 1973 to 1977 as a researcher in the National Physical Research Laboratory in Pretoria, 1983-1987 as Group Leader of the Ceramics Division, 1988-1994 as a Research Manager in the Battery Technology Unit.

1981-82 he worked with John Goodenough as a Postdoc at the University of Oxford; 1985 he was a scientific guest in Oxford again.

Since 1994, he is working in the Argonne National Laboratory in Illinois. He is Group Leader in the Electrochemical Energy Storage Department.

Thackeray has more than 180 publications, and he holds more than 25 patents.
