Metropolitan Rennes

Metropolitan Rennes (French: Rennes Métropole)is the intercommunal structure gathering the commune of Rennes in France and some of its suburbs. It was created on January 1, 2015, succeeding the agglomeration community of Rennes, which had itself succeeded in 2000 to previous district created in 1970 with less powers than the current métropole.

The goal of the Metropolitan Region (intercommunal structure for the largest French towns like Lille, Lyon, Bordeaux or Strasbourg) is to build a better metropolitan area by synchronizing the transport system, environmental actions, urbanization, economic and social development, culture, university research, etc.

In 2012, Metropolitan Rennes has 420 000 inhabitants.

Participants

The communauté comprises the following 43 communes:

Metropolitan Rennes (420 000 inhabitants) encompasses only the center of the metropolitan area of Rennes (690 000 inhabitants). Communes further away from the center of the metropolitan area have formed their own intercommunal structures, such as Chateaugiron, Noyal-sur-Vilaine, Liffré, Melesse, La Mézière, Montfort-sur-Meu or Guichen.
