Methyl fluorosulfonate, (also known as magic methyl), is the organic compound with the formula FSO2OCH3. This colorless liquid is a strong methylating agent of some use in organic synthesis. It is closely related to methyl trifluoromethanesulfonate. It is prepared by distillation of an equimolar mixture of fluorosulfonic acid and dimethyl sulfate.

It is a powerful methylating reagent (about four orders of magnitude more reactive than methyl iodide).

The compound was first produced by the reaction of methanol with fluorosulfonic acid.

Toxicity

It is acutely toxic with LC50 (rat) ~ 5 ppm.
