Mere Mortals is a British video game developer based in Newcastle upon Tyne, known for various ports, PDC World Championship Darts and mini game compilations. The studio was suffered massive layoffs and financial trouble in 2010, eventually withdrawing from games in 2011.
History
Mere Mortals was a game development company founded in 1999 by David Jeffries and Graeme Love. It was established after Beyond Reality (earlier known as Digital Developments) closed down in 1999. Jeffries and Love both worked at Beyond Reality.
Mere Mortals also had a sister company Mere Mortals Post that provided post-production, audio, video and editing from a custom-built facility in the Northern section England, along with high end computer graphics services for television and film.
The company established Mere Mortals New Zealand in August 2007 to "deal with title progression, leaving Mere Mortals UK to handle new IP." Subsequently Mere Mortals appointed Steve Walmsley as Managing Director while David Jeffries relocated to lead the New Zealand operations.
In January 2008 it was announced that their in-house Mortality Engine had been completely rewritten allowing new functionality in the development of PS2, PC, PSP and Wii games, and also added Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 output. The company also announced that the first titles on these formats would be available mid 2008.
Mere Mortals stopped doing business for a time but the company remained in existence. During this period many of the employees, including founder Graeme Love, left the company to join Eutechnyx.
On 7 September 2010, it was announced by owner David Jeffries that Mere Mortals had been restructured and would no longer be involved in the video games industry. The company would then concentrate on the ‘moving Image arena’, with Jeffries looking to recruit for new key positions.
