Melvin X was a cofounder of the Black Student Union while a student at the University of California, Los Angeles. His rhetoric promoted the idea that African Americans' rights would next be advanced through violence:

In the late 1960s, he would paint his name, "Revolution NOW" or other revolutionary sayings on walls in his ghetto.

Marion Alexander was charged with the murder of Melvin X, but the charges were dropped after he passed a polygraph test in Las Vegas, October 1970.
