Melanothrix alternans is a moth in the Eupterotidae family. It was described by Pagenstecher in 1890. It is found in the Philippines (Palawan) and on Borneo. The habitat consists of hill dipterocarp forests and wet heath forests.

Adult males have no white area on the forewings, but a diffuse, triangular ochreous zone on the margin. The females have a white band across the forewings postmedially, and a row of dark circles in the white marginal zone of the hindwing.
