Maxwell William "Max" Poulter (1913 – 2 September 1962) was an Australian politician. Born in Devonport, Tasmania, he was educated at Devonport High School and then studied at the University of Tasmania, before becoming a teacher at Tasmanian state schools. He studied for a PhD at Columbia University in New York, winning his doctorate in 1952, after which he became a lecturer in education at the University of Queensland. He was elected to the Australian Senate in 1961 as a Labor Senator for Queensland, taking his seat in July 1962; however, less than three months later, he died, necessitating the appointment of George Whiteside to fill the vacancy.
