Massachusetts general election, 1970

A Massachusetts general election was held on November 3, 1970 in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

Contents

The election included:

  • statewide elections for United States Senator, Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General, Secretary of the Commonwealth, Treasurer, and Auditor;
  • district elections for U.S. Representatives, State Representatives, State Senators, and Governor's Councillors; and
  • ballot questions at the state and local levels.
  • Democratic and Republican candidates were selected in party primaries held September 15, 1970.

    United States Senator

    Democrat Ted Kennedy was re-elected over Republican Josiah Spaulding, Socialist Labor candidate Lawrence Gilfedder, and Prohibition candidate Mark R. Shaw.

    Governor & Lieutenant Governor

    Republicans Francis W. Sargent and Donald R. Dwight were elected Governor and Lieutenant Governor, respectively, over Democrats Kevin White and Michael Dukakis, Socialist Labor candidates Henning A. Blomen and Francis A. Votano, and Prohibition candidates John C. Hedges and Albert E. Bates.

    Attorney General

    Attorney General Robert H. Quinn, who was appointed by the Massachusetts General Court to fill the unexpired term of Elliot Richardson, defeated Republican Donald L. Conn and Socialist Labor candidate Willy N. Hogseth in the general election.

    Secretary of the Commonwealth

    Secretary of the Commonwealth John Davoren, who was appointed by the Massachusetts General Court to fill the unexpired term of Kevin White, defeated Republican Mary Newman, Socialist Labor candidate Edgar E. Gaudet, and Prohibition candidate Murvin Becker in the general election.

    Treasurer and Receiver-General

    Incumbent Treasurer and Receiver-General Robert Q. Crane defeated Republican Frederick Hannon, Socialist Labor candidate Roy K. Nelson, and Prohibition candidate John B. Lauder in the general election.

    Auditor

    Incumbent Auditor Thaddeus M. Buczko defeated Republican Frank P. Bucci, Socialist Labor candidate Raymond Gray, and Prohibition candidate Roger I. Williams in the general election.
