Marxism: An Historical and Critical Study is a 1961 book by George Lichtheim, in which Lichtheim provides a study of the development of Marxism from its origins to 1917. It has been seen as a classic discussion of the subject, though it has received some criticism.

Scholarly reception

Historian Peter Gay described Marxism: An Historical and Critical Study as one of the best discussions of alienation in the literature on Marx and Hegel. Political scientist David McLellan praised Lichtheim's book in the 1995 edition of his Karl Marx: His Life and Thought. Political theorist Terrell Carver identified Lichtheim's work as a classic. Historian of science Roger Smith wrote that "though sometimes criticized in detail", the work helps locate Marx "in the left political movements of the nineteenth century".
