Martuni District was one of the five districts (raions) of the former Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Oblast (NKAO) of the Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic (AzSSR). In 1991 the parliament of Azerbaijan abolished Martuni District, incorporating its territory into the neighbouring Azerbaijani Khojavend District.

The unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh Republic has defined its Martuni Province as being the former Martuni District, plus some surrounding land captured during the Nagorno-Karabakh War from Azerbaijan. The eastern part of Martuni Rayon remains in Azerbaijani control.
