Martinović (Serbian Cyrillic: Mартиновић, meaning: Son of Martin) is a common surname in Serbia and Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia. It is also the surname of an montenigerin aristocratic dynasty, the Martinović. It was named after Martin Orlović (the founder of the dynasty). There are references of this family in:
- Gorski Vjenac, or "The Mountain Wreath" (medieval literature piece).
- Dan Brown's book "The Da Vinci Code". In which they are described as the descendants of Jesus Nazareth (holy bloodline). Their cadet branch were the Obrenovic (named after Obren Martinović), the serbian royal family which ruled from 1815-1903. They are by bloodline (by marriage of their male ancestors to the female ancestors of Karadjordjević) connected to the current royal family of Serbia, Karadjordjevići
Martinovics
Martinović: also a well known Montenegrin aristorcratic family during the former days of the royal state, as well as one of the clans of Montenegro. To this day the tradition of the burning of the Badnjak (oak branch) outside the Cetinje Monastery in celebration of Orthodox Christmas is performed by a member of the Martinovići.
