  • – Scottish Transport Minister Stewart Stevenson cuts first sod of the Borders Rail Project in Galashiels. Main construction work on revival of the line from Tweedbank to Edinburgh is expected to take place over the period 2011–2014.

  • – Maharajas’ Express luxury train begins operation in India as a joint venture between Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation and the travel agency Cox and Kings India Ltd.
    • March 24
  • – The Sjursøya train crash was a runaway train accident which happened in Oslo, Norway and killed three people.
    • March 29
  • – Moscow Metro terrorist bombings: an explosion blasts a train at Lubyanka station on the Moscow Metro at approximately 7:56AM local time (3:56AM UTC), followed by a second at Park Kultury station around 8:38AM. At least 38 were believed killed on the day, and the explosives were thought to have been placed by female suicide bombers from North Caucasus.

  • – Iarnród Éireann reopens Ennis–Athenry to scheduled passenger operation with introduction of a Galway–Limerick service, first stage of the Western Railway Corridor reopening.
