Junior

Cantin played in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) from 2007 to 2011, scoring 16 goals and 64 assists for 80 points, while earning 278 penalty minutes, in 249 games played with the Belleville Bulls, Windsor Spitfires, and Mississauga St. Michael's Majors. Cantin won the 2010 OHL Championship while playing with the Windsor Spitfires, and was recognized for his outstanding play while with Mississauga when he was selected to the 2010-11 OHL Second All-Star Team.

Professional

On March 23, 2011, the Boston Bruins of the National Hockey League signed Cantin as a free agent to a three-year entry-level contract.

On February 27, 2012, the Bruins traded Cantin (along with Yannick Riendeau) to the New York Islanders in exchange for Brian Rolston and Mike Mottau.

Following the 2013–14 season, the Islanders did not extend a qualifying offer to Cantin. As a result, he became an unrestricted free agent on July 1, 2014. On September 25, 2014, Cantin opted to continue his professional career in the ECHL, in agreeing to a one-year deal with the Utah Grizzlies.

As a free agent in the following off-season, Cantin left North America in pursuing a career abroad, signing a one-year deal with the Coventry Blaze of the EIHL on August 5, 2016. After one season in the UK, Cantin departed the Blaze in May 2017.
