Börner developed the first working fiber-optical data transmission system in 1965. He received a patent for an "electro-optical transmission system utilizing lasers". From 1954 to 1979 he worked for the German Telefunken GmbH. Later, from 1979 to 1995, he was professor at the Technical University Munich.

Awards and memberships

  • 1962: Award of the Nachrichtentechnischen Gesellschaft (NTG in the VDE; today Informationstechnische Gesellschaft) for proficiencies on the field of elektromecanical filters and power-line communication
  • 1982: Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE)
