Malaysian and Singaporean Tamil cinema

The making of Tamil films outside its motherland of Tamil Nadu is actively growing. With the Tamil diaspora worldwide, there are many enthusiastic filmmakers who want to make their mark. In particular, more films are coming from Singapore and Malaysia.

The history of film-making in Tamil language in Malaysia dates back to the early 1970s. In 2008 Eric Khoo's Tamil language social drama My Magic became Singapore's first film to compete for the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. Estate Boy is the first Tamil animated series made in Malaysia.
