Plot
The story revolves around a rich man Dharmalingam (D. Balasubramaniam)and his only daughter Malathi (Savitri). The mother leaves a will stating the daughter malathi should be married to her missing brother son, who would inherit her considerable wealth. The rich man sends his friend Kanniyappan (T. S. Balaiah), who has an eye on the young women and her property. In search of him. The crook sets up his nephew Thandavam (J. P. Chandra Babu) as the missing man and the father decides to get the two married. Mean while, another shy young man Chandran (Gemini Ganesan), who never looks any women in the eyes. Becomes the Malathi's teacher. The two falls in love and decide to marry. Scared stiff, the villain Kanniyappan manages to get the Chandran dismissed from his job. Chandran grandmother Kamatchi (S. R. Janaki) gives his magic armour which will make him tough and bold. Chandran returns to his heart thorb disguised as an elderly gardener. The will suddenly disappears and more complications crop up. However, truth surfaces as it always does, the Kanniyappan is exposed and the lovers are united.

Reception
A predictable story line, it was made into an interesting film by mani. The dialogue was by Sridhar, who had not yet graduated to film making. However, the film attracted public attention mainly because of the comedy of Chandra Babu, who played the fake cousin. T. S. Durai Raj, an underrated comedian, lent him excellent support. D. Balasubramaniam as the widowed father was good as usual. During those days he was one of the few actors who, despite his theatre background, played his roles cinematically, without exaggeration or overacting. He enjoyed a long innings as a character actor and travelled in a hand - drawn rickshaw he owned, a familiar sight in George Town, where he lived. Many people owned such rickshaws in those days. Which had a bell at the foot which the owned could press like horm. The lead pairs romantic sequence, Balasubramaniam acting and the comic son sequence between Chandra Babu and Durai Raj.

Comic song sequence involving J. P. Chandrababu and T. S. Durai Raj the song by Kovaa Mampazhame Malkovaa become hit, where the former expresses his love for Savitri, looking at her photograph. A number of funny words such as Samalakkidi Giri giri.. Saavuttu Paaru Vaadakari made the song famous.
