The MV Pacific Opal (ex-Hatasia) is a chemical tanker built in 1993 and currently owned by Tankers Pacific Management Singapore.

Event off Somalia

The ship was approached by three skiffs while sailing off the coast of Somalia on 4 April 2009. Presuming them to be potential pirates, the Pacific Opal sent a mayday, which was received by the Canadian frigate HMCS Winnipeg, which was nearby escorting another vessel. HMCS Winnipeg sent a Sea King helicopter to investigate, and the skiffs retreated.
