The Super Eight is the common name of an annual boys high school ice hockey tournament held in Massachusetts that takes place in March each year. A selection committee chooses the top ten public and private high schools from the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association to complete in this tournament. The tournament is technically called the MIAA Division IA Men's Ice Hockey Championship. The tournament is a single-elimination bracket of ten teams.

History

Since 1991, the Super Eight has been held in Boston, Massachusetts at the TD Garden, home of the Boston Bruins. However, many of the games leading up to the Finals may be held at alternative sites, including Tsongas Center, Volpe Complex and other universities in the state. The tournament was the basis dor the creation of the much newer Super Eight Baseball Tournament to crown a supreme state champion.

Format history and changes

  • 1991–2000 – 8 teams are selected to participate in a double-elimination tournament, during the month of March.
  • 2000–2003 – The format changed to a 10 team-format with the bottom four seeds playing a play-in game.
  • 2004–2012 – The bottom four teams play a play-in game then the 8 teams are divided into 2 brackets of round-robin play, with four teams playing in semifinal crossover games.
  • 2013–present – The play-in game is the same, but the round of 8 is a best of three series.
  • Team appearances

While Catholic Memorial has won over half of the 25 tournaments with 13 Championships, Malden Catholic's four straight championships marked the first time a school other than Catholic Memorial has won more than three consecutive tournaments. Reading Memorial High School became the first public team to win the Super Eight after defeating Malden Catholic 3–0 in 2008. The tournament has been Won 22 times by schools in the Catholic Conference. Catholic Memorial with 13, Malden Catholic with 5, BC High with 4, St. John's Prep with 1. Xaverian Brothers HS is the only Catholic Conference team without a Super 8 Title to date. The most recent title was won by Malden Catholic High School, with a 2-1 OT win versus St. John's Preparatory School. This marks the Lancer's 5th championship in the last 6 seasons.
