He played college basketball at the University of Washington, and became an honorable mention all-American. Nance went on to be selected in the fourth round of the 1965 NBA draft by the St. Louis Hawks. Unfortunately, a knee injury ended his professional career before he ever played a game for St. Louis.

During his tenure at Division II Central Missouri State, he won a national championship. He was also an assistant coach at the University of Kentucky, and Fresno State. His total 19-year-Division I and II head coaching mark is 302-224.

Aside from his career as a coach, Nance also served as a special agent for the FBI, as well as working as an assistant director for the NCAA. Nance drew upon his experience as an FBI agent to write a novel titled Bridger:Deadly Peril.
