Luxembourg was represented by 17-year-old Greek singer Vicky Leandros (billed on the night simply as Vicky), with the song '"L'amour est bleu", at the 1967 Eurovision Song Contest, which took place on 8 April in Vienna. The song was chosen internally by broadcaster RTL.
"L'amour est bleu" finished only fourth in the contest, but went on to become one of the most globally successful and instantly recognisable melodies ever to come out of Eurovision. An instrumental version of the song ("Love Is Blue") recorded by French orchestra leader Paul Mauriat topped the United States Billboard Hot 100 for five weeks in early 1968, becoming one of the year's biggest-selling US singles, and also went to number 12 on the UK Singles Chart. The song has since been covered a multitude of times in both vocal and instrumental versions and is classed as a standard, although most are unaware of its Eurovision origin.
At Eurovision
On the night of the final Leandros performed second in the running order, following the Netherlands and preceding Austria. In the voting "L'amour est bleu" picked up the highest mark from the Dutch jury, voting first, but failed to challenge thereafter as the United Kingdom pulled away from the pack to gain a very comprehensive victory. By the close it had also been passed by the songs from Ireland and France, finally finishing fourth of the 17 entries. The Luxembourgian jury awarded 5 of its 10 points to the United Kingdom.
