History

The Ancient city in the Roman province of Phrygia Prima (Pacatiana) was important enough to become a suffragan bishopric of the Metropolitan Archbishop of Laodicea (on the Lycus).

No ordinary seems to be recorded.

It faded.

Titular see

The diocese was nominally restored as a titular bishopric in 1926.

It is vacant, having had the following incumbents, all of the lowest (episcopal) rank :

  • John Francis Norton (1926.03.08 – 1928.04.09)
  • Bishop-elect Martino Meulenberg, Montfort Missionaries (S.M.M.) (1929.05.30 – 1929.06.28)
  • Joseph Henry Albers (1929.12.16 – 1937.08.04)
  • George John Rehring (1937.08.06 – 1950.07.16)
  • Luís António Palha Teixeira, Dominican Order (O.P.) (1951.02.20 – 1981.08.21)
