Dr. Luis M. Proenza (born c. 1943) is president emeritus of The University of Akron. He is a former member of the United States President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology, a council originally established by President George H.W. Bush in 1990 to enable the office of the president to receive advice from the private and academic sectors on technology, scientific research priorities, and math and science education.

Proenza holds a bachelor's degree from Emory University (1965), a master's degree from Ohio State University (1966) and a doctorate from the University of Minnesota (1971). He is also a former member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity.
President of The University of Akron
Proenza served as president of The University of Akron from 1999 until 2014. He took a sabbatical leave from the university 2014 to 2016, during which he was paid $500,000. He returned to the university as a full-time tenured professor in the Office of Academic Affairs in 2016, at an annual salary of $375,000.
