History
The Jesuits have been in Madagascar for over 150 years – French, Italian, Polish – from which are derived today's 275 Jesuits on the island, almost all Malagasy, 167 still in training. Higher education efforts have included the technical, industrial, agricultural, and communications-journalism.
College of San Michel
The college is named after French Fr. Michel Lanusse whose work here spanned from 1888 to 1918. His earliest educational efforts were on behalf of a college or Ambohipo Normal School that would provide the Mission catechists and teachers, the Hova government officials and French performers and employees. Land was granted the Catholic mission by King Radama II, and later Prince Ramahatra, cousin of the Queen donated a portion of the current area to Saint-Michel Amparibe. The College St. Michael has always had a special relationship with the elites, many of whom attended the college, as with heads of state General Gabriel Ramantsoa, Admiral Didier Ratsiraka, and King Hassan II of Morocco. The list of other prominent Malagasy alumni is extensive.
The internal life of the College passed by the abolition of the European section (1906 to 1934), the abolition of Madagascar College (1942), the First Class Terminal section Philosophy (1952-1953), followed by Elementary Mathematics (1956-1957 ), and Experimental Sciences (1960-1961), the first candidates for the Bachelor (1955), 20 years after the start of secondary education in 1935, the arrival of the girls (1966) and the opening of education higher technical (1983). The Higher Technical Education included two specializations, mechanical engineering and industrial computing and electronics and industrial automation. There are 76 boys for only 3 girls.
