Lovejoy State Memorial is operated by the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency. It commemorates abolitionist newspaper editor Elijah Parish Lovejoy, who was killed by a mob while defending his printing press at Alton on November 7, 1837. Dedicated in 1897, the memorial is located in Alton City Cemetery in Alton, Illinois, and was sculpted by Robert Bringhurst and Richard Bock. The memorial consists of one tall center column topped with a bronze winged figure blowing a trumpet, two shorter columns with bronze eagles, bronze reliefs on each side of the base, and markers on the steps with information about Owen Lovejoy. Lovejoy’s grave is located nearby.
