Leonard James Ashton CB QHC was the inaugural Bishop in Cyprus and the Gulf. Born in 1915 and educated at Tyndale Hall, Bristol, he was ordained in 1943 and—after a curacy at Cheadle—was for nearly 30 years an RAF chaplain. From 1974 until 1976, he was Assistant Bishop of Jerusalem prior to the re-organisation that led to his elevation to the Episcopate. He died in 2001 in Chesham.
